NEW YORK (USA)- Annalena Baerbock of Germany has been elected as the new President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). She steps into the role at a critical moment for the international community. Baerbock received 167 votes in a secret ballot. Helga Schmid, a write-in candidate also from Germany, garnered seven votes, while 14 delegations abstained.
First Woman from Western Europe to Lead the GA
At 44 years old, Annalena Baerbock is one of the youngest presidents ever elected to lead the Assembly. She is also the first woman from the Western European and Others Group (WEOG) to take the gavel and only the fifth woman overall.
Her presidency begins as the UN faces conflict, development setbacks, financial strain, and the upcoming selection of the next Secretary-General.

UNGA Vital as Security Council Remains Deadlocked
With the UN Security Council blocked on issues like Ukraine and Gaza, the General Assembly has taken center stage. Though it lacks binding authority, the Assembly has passed numerous resolutions calling for ceasefires, humanitarian access, and civilian protections.
The 2022 “Veto Initiative” allows the GA to debate issues blocked by permanent Security Council members, bringing added relevance to the Assembly’s role.
Annalena Baerbock Promises Reform, Inclusion, and Unity
In her acceptance speech, Baerbock pledged to be “an honest broker and a unifier” for all 193 Member States. Her guiding theme: “Better Together.”
She outlined three top priorities:
- Improve UN efficiency and effectiveness
- Advance the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals
- Ensure the Assembly is inclusive and diverse
She stressed the importance of gender equality, multilingualism, youth involvement, and civil society engagement.
Focus on UN80 and Bold Institutional Reform
Baerbock also addressed the UN80 initiative, launched earlier by Secretary-General António Guterres.
“The UN80 Initiative should not be a mere cost-cutting exercise,” she said. “We need a strong, nimble, and purpose-driven United Nations.”
She called for a renewed focus on the UN’s core goals: peace, development, and justice.
Broad Support for Annalena Baerbock’s Multilateral Vision
Outgoing GA President Philemon Yang praised Baerbock’s commitment to multilateralism. He expressed confidence in her ability to build trust and lead meaningful reform.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed her election during a “difficult and uncertain time”, noting the urgent need for common solutions to global crises.

Ukraine Welcomes Annalena Baerbock’s Election
Ukraine’s UN envoy, Andrii Melnyk, voiced hope that Baerbock’s presidency will help end the war in Ukraine.
“Her leadership during Germany’s support of Ukraine shows she understands the stakes,” Melnyk told DW.
“We believe she will defend the UN Charter, especially the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty.”
He added that the General Assembly could now play a greater role in upholding international law, especially with Russia vetoing Security Council resolutions.
Pivotal 80th UNGA Session Ahead
The upcoming 80th session, beginning September 9, is expected to be historic. Major goals include:
- Pushing forward the UN80 reforms
- Addressing ongoing global conflicts
- Laying the groundwork for selecting the next Secretary-General by 2026
Baerbock’s leadership will be key in navigating these urgent challenges and redefining the role of the General Assembly in the modern multilateral system.
