Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) – Brazil has officially assumed the BRICS Brazil 2025 presidency, marking its fourth mandate after leading the group in 2010, 2014, and 2019. The presidency’s theme is “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.”

This year, Brazil seeks to drive forward reforms in global governance and boost cooperation among emerging economies. The country’s leadership aims to strengthen BRICS as a unified voice in international politics, economics, and development.

BRICS Brazil 2025: Two Strategic Priorities for 2025

Brazil’s presidency is focusing on two major priorities:

  1. Deepening Global South Cooperation 
  2. Expanding BRICS Partnerships for Social, Economic, and Environmental Development 

To achieve these goals, Brazil has outlined six key areas for political action and coordination. 

BRICS Brazil 2025: Six Core Areas of Focus

A. Global Health Cooperation

Brazil proposes stronger BRICS collaboration in health. The presidency will launch the BRICS Partnership for the Elimination of Socially Determined Diseases and Neglected Tropical Diseases. This aims to increase access to medicines and vaccines across member nations.

B. Trade, Investment, and Finance

Brazil will push for reform in global financial systems. It advocates for using local currencies and new payment platforms to diversify trade. The country will also promote the 2030 Strategy for the BRICS Economic Partnership and strengthen the Partnership for the New Industrial Revolution.

C. Climate Change

The presidency will introduce a BRICS Climate Leadership Agenda. It includes a Leaders’ Declaration on Climate Finance, aimed at guiding a shift in the global financial system to address climate challenges.

D. Artificial Intelligence Governance

Brazil intends to lead global efforts on inclusive and responsible AI governance. The goal is to unlock AI’s potential to support social, economic, and environmental development across the Global South.

E. Multilateral Peace and Security

Brazil is calling for reforms in the global peace and security architecture. The initiative aims to promote peaceful conflict resolution, prevent humanitarian disasters, and rebuild global trust in diplomacy.

F. Institutional Development of BRICS

Finally, Brazil seeks to strengthen BRICS’ internal structure and cohesion. This includes improving coordination mechanisms and long-term planning.

BRICS Brazil 2025: High-Level Meetings in Brasilia

More than 100 ministerial and technical meetings are scheduled from February to July 2025 in Brasilia. The BRICS Leaders’ Summit began today, July 6, and continues tomorrow.
