Across continents, from the UN headquarters to regional bodies such as the African Union, the European Union, ASEAN, ParLatino, and leading universities—one concern echoes louder than ever: Young people and women are not sufficiently connected to the policy ecosystem.
For millions of youth, “policy” feels synonymous with “politics,” and “politics” feels like a word to avoid. This misconception is one of the greatest global governance challenges of our time. When the next generation distances itself from policymaking, the world loses visionaries, peacebuilders, innovators, and nation-shapers.
Today, out of 45,931 Hon’ble Parliamentarians across the world, only 14,592 are young parliamentarians—less than one-third. And while women represent half of the global population, they hold only 11,548 seats in 193 national parliaments — slightly above one-quarter of global representation.
These numbers are not just statistics. They are a warning. A future without empowered youth and women in the policy space is a future without sustainability, justice, or innovation.
We stand at a critical juncture in global governance. The very engines of our policy ecosystem—the parliaments, legislative bodies, and institutions that shape our world—are facing an existential threat: the disengagement of youth.
Today’s young minds, brimming with idealism, innovation, and digital fluency, often view the policy realm as “Politics”—a dirty word, a system to be avoided. This pervasive disillusionment is not just a trend; it is a profound danger. It’s a disconnect repeatedly voiced by the UN, the European Union, the African Union, ASEAN, ParLatino, and leaders across continents.
The statistics are alarming:
- Out of 45,931 sitting Parliamentarians globally, only 14,592 are Youth Parliamentarians—less than one-third.
- The representation of women in our 193 Parliaments stands at just over a quarter, with only 11,548 Hon’ble Women Parliamentarians.
When the voice of the future and the perspective of half the population are marginalized, the policies we create are fundamentally incomplete. Disconnection from the policy ecosystem is a recipe for a fractured and unsustainable future. We have a moral and ethical responsibility to close this gap, to educate, enlighten, and empower the next generation of leadership.
