we have the distinct honour of speaking with Year 2014 Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, a global leader whose lifelong work has transformed the fight against child labour, trafficking, and exploitation.

Mr. Satyarthi’s efforts have not only rescued thousands of children but have also shaped international discourse on child rights, influencing governments, global institutions, and civil society across the world. His advocacy reminds us that the protection of children is not merely a social responsibility, but a fundamental test of governance and democratic accountability.

NATO Parliamentary Assembly President Marcos Perestrello and Secretary General Benedetta Berti attended the Bucha Summit held on 31 March 2026 in Ukraine. The gathering, chaired by the Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament Ruslan Stefanchuk, brought together Speakers and Deputy Speakers of Parliaments, as well as presidents of international parliamentary assemblies. The Summit was also attended by the leadership of Ukraine,  including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. 

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will elect its ninth Secretary General at the 152nd IPU Assembly, which will be held in Istanbul, Türkiye. The inaugural EU Parliamentary Democracy Forum convened in the European Parliament on November 19, 2025, bringing together Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and national parliamentarians to forge a stronger defense for democracy across Europe.

Over 100 Speakers of Parliament from around 120 countries gathered at the United Nations Office at Geneva for the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, held from 29 to 31 July 2025. The high-level summit, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations, focused on building peace, justice, and prosperity through stronger multilateral cooperation.

WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary General Martin Chungong have jointly called on national parliaments to ratify the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies. This landmark agreement is the first WTO accord to focus on environmental sustainability.

Ethiopia is set to host the Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2) from September 8–10, 2025, in Addis Ababa. On the eve of his 90th birthday, the 14th Dalai Lama made a landmark announcement. Speaking from Dharamshala, India, he confirmed that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue after him. He declared that only the Gaden Phodrang Trust, which he established in 2011, will have the authority to select his successor.

The term “BRIC” was coined in 2001 by a Goldman Sachs economist to highlight the rising economic power of Brazil, Russia, India, and China. These four countries later took political initiative to form a forum for dialogue and global cooperation.

Brazil has officially assumed the BRICS Brazil 2025 presidency, marking its fourth mandate after leading the group in 2010, 2014, and 2019. The presidency’s theme is “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.”

The International Day of Parliamentarism is celebrated every year on 30 June, the date in 1889 on which the IPU was founded. The Day was established in 2018 through a United Nations General Assembly Resolution.

The Central American Parliament (PARLACEN) backs Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara, calling it the only credible solution. Regional support grows as El Salvador, Panama, and the Dominican Republic deepen diplomatic ties with Rabat.

In a historic move, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey of Ghana has officially taken office as the Commonwealth Secretary-General. She assumed her position on April 1, 2025, following her unanimous appointment by Commonwealth Heads of Government at their 2024 biennial meeting in Apia, Samoa.

At 44 years old, Baerbock is one of the youngest presidents ever elected to lead the Assembly. She is also the first woman from the Western European and Others Group (WEOG) to take the gavel and only the fifth woman overall.

Morocco will host the 83rd Session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (APU) from May 21 to 22, 2025.

The Arab Parliament inaugurated its fourth session of the first legislative year of the fourth parliamentary term, held at Iraq’s Council of Representatives in Baghdad. In a statement, the parliament praised Iraq’s hosting of the upcoming 34th regular session of the Arab League Council at the summit level.

The Pan-African Parliament was established in March 2004, by Article 17 of the Constitutive Act of the African Union, as one of the nine Organs provided for in the Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community signed in Abuja, Nigeria, in 1991. The Protocol establishing the PAP was ratified by 49 Member States.

NATO Defence Ministers concluded a two-day meeting on Friday (14 June 2024) to prepare the Washington Summit in July. They discussed strengthening NATO’s deterrence and defence and support for Ukraine.
