Baghdad (Iraq) – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa al-Sudani has launched a powerful new political alliance just months before the upcoming elections. The move aims to end legislative deadlock, pass urgent reforms, and boost his influence in parliament.

Sudani has formed the Reconstruction and Development Bloc, a major parliamentary group now counting 53 members of parliament (MPs). Spokesman Firas al-Maslamawi confirmed the number could grow to 60 MPs in the coming weeks.

This new bloc becomes the largest in Iraq’s 328-seat parliament, positioning Sudani as a central figure in national politics.

Iraq Parliament in Gridlock: A Bloc Offers Hope

For months, Iraq’s parliament has been paralysed. Factional disputes, boycotts, and an early legislative recess in May led to stalled reforms. Many sessions failed to reach a quorum.

Sudani’s bloc is seen as a lifeline for the faltering legislature, offering structure and direction. It aims to revive the parliament’s role and push through stalled bills.

At a Baghdad press conference, Maslamawi outlined the bloc’s priorities:

  • Infrastructure and economic development
  • Anti-corruption laws
  • Protection of public funds
  • Stronger oversight of government institutions

He emphasized the importance of legislation with national consensus, targeting areas like healthcare, education, public services, and security.

The bloc also backs legislation for the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), retirement reform, and security agency development. These are high-impact laws that can reshape Iraq’s governance.

Maslamawi said, “Our mission is to lead on critical legislation. We are committed to convening sessions and passing laws that matter to the people.”

The bloc is inclusive. Any MP aligned with its goals can join. Its principles include:

  • Citizenship
  • Equitable distribution of national wealth
  • Commitment to state-building

MP Nazem al-Shibli called it a “framework for a broader coalition”, signaling potential expansion beyond current membership.

Analysts on Iraq Parliament: Sudani’s Political Rise Is Real

Political analyst Khalifa al-Tamimi told Baghdad Today that this bloc shows growing trust in Sudani’s leadership. He’s no longer just a consensus choice—he’s a power player.

Tamimi noted Sudani’s balanced approach to regional tensions, while focusing on domestic reconstruction. “He has maintained Iraq’s neutrality and delivered on key services,” Tamimi said.

Elections Loom: Second Term in Sight?

With elections approaching, this new alliance may pave the way for Sudani’s second term. His growing popularity and control over the largest bloc give him a clear edge.

Traditional political parties are reportedly uneasy about Sudani’s momentum. If current trends continue, he may enter the elections as the front-runner.

A Game-Changer in Iraqi Politics

Prime Minister Sudani’s formation of the Reconstruction and Development Bloc marks a turning point in Iraq’s political scene. By uniting MPs and setting a clear legislative agenda, he has strengthened his position ahead of the national elections.
