
London (United Kingdom)- In a historic move, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey of Ghana has officially taken office as the Commonwealth Secretary-General. She assumed her position on April 1, 2025, following her unanimous appointment by Commonwealth Heads of Government at their 2024 biennial meeting in Apia, Samoa.
Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey: A Trailblazer for Africa and Women
Shirley Botchwey is the first African woman and the second African overall to lead the 56-nation Commonwealth. Her appointment marks a significant step forward for gender equality and African representation in global governance.
As Commonwealth Secretary-General, Botchwey:

Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey Biography
Botchwey brings over 20 years of experience in international diplomacy, foreign affairs, and governance. From 2017 to 2024, she served as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, leading major reforms in foreign policy and consular services through digitisation.
She was also a key member of Ghana’s National Security Council and served four terms as Member of Parliament from 2005 to 2021, representing Weija and later Anyaa-Sowutuom, Ghana’s most populous constituencies.
During her tenure as Foreign Minister, Botchwey chaired the ECOWAS Council of Ministers (2020–2022). She led coordinated responses to regional security threats and democratic transitions.
She played a pivotal role in:
- UN Security Council Resolution 2667 (2022) – Financing AU-led peace operations.
- UN Resolution 2634 – Combating piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
- Promoting Ghana’s global cultural diplomacy through the “Year of Return” and “Beyond the Return” campaigns.
