Helsinki, (Finland) – Eemeli Peltonen, a 30-year-old Member of Parliament (MP) for the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP), has died by suspected suicide inside Finland’s main Parliament House (Eduskuntatalo) in Helsinki.
Authorities confirmed his death on Tuesday morning, triggering widespread grief across Finland’s political community. The tragic incident occurred while parliament is in summer recess.
At 11:06 local time (08:06 GMT), emergency services were called to the parliament building. Police, medical, and rescue teams responded immediately. A few hours later, the Finnish Parliament released a statement confirming Peltonen’s passing. Police stated there was no suspicion of foul play.
Parliament’s Security Director, Aron Toivonen, confirmed the fatality had occurred on the premises. He added that all proper emergency protocols were followed. The news of Peltonen’s death has stunned the nation. Politicians across party lines expressed deep sorrow and respect for their colleague.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo:

As a mark of respect, Orpo suspended all official political activity for the day, including his own party’s summer meeting.

A Promising Political Career
Peltonen was elected to Parliament in April 2023, representing the Uusimaa region. He secured 5,747 votes and served on the Administration and Legal Affairs Committees. His political journey began early, Elected to Järvenpää City Council at age 18, Youngest-ever Chairman of the Järvenpää City Board at age 22. Peltonen was widely seen as a rising star in Finnish politics.
Struggling with health issues
In June 2025, Peltonen posted on Instagram that he had been absent from parliamentary work due to a kidney-related illness, which led to a secondary infection. He received treatment in Meilahti Hospital, Helsinki. “I’m already discharged from hospital, but due to the situation I’m on summer sick leave and now fully focused on recovering,” he wrote. He remained on medical leave leading up to the parliament’s summer recess.
