Indian Parliament Winter Session: One of the Shortest Sessions Since 2014
This Winter Session is expected to be one of the shortest since the Narendra Modi government took office in 2014. Traditionally, sessions begin in the third week of November and end before Christmas. Last year, the Winter Session lasted from November 25 to December 20 with 20 Lok Sabha and 19 Rajya Sabha sittings.
Indian Parliament Winter Session: Key Bills to Be Considered
Several important bills are anticipated during this session. The 129th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which proposes simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha and all state assemblies, will be introduced. The 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which suggests the removal of ministers sentenced to jail terms of 30 days or more, is also on the agenda. Additionally, the Jan Vishwas Bill and amendments to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code are likely to be passed.
Opposition Criticism and Challenges
Opposition leaders have criticized the session’s short duration. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh called it “unusually delayed and truncated,” accusing the government of having no substantial business or debates planned. Derek O’Brien, leader of the Trinamool Congress in Rajya Sabha, described the government’s approach as suffering from “Parliament-ophobia,” or fear of parliamentary scrutiny.
Review of Previous Parliamentary Activity
The 2025 Monsoon Session from July 21 to August 21 saw 12 bills passed by Lok Sabha and 14 by Rajya Sabha but suffered frequent disruptions and adjournments. The 2024 Winter Session had extensive debates on Operation Sindoor and the Constitution’s 75th anniversary.
Officials have expressed intentions to increase parliamentary productivity in this session. Smooth proceedings and meaningful debates are expected, with cooperation between the Treasury and Opposition benches being crucial.
