Singapore PM Lawrence Wong and his long-ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) have secured a sweeping victory in Singapore’s 14th general election, extending the party’s uninterrupted 66-year rule. The outcome is a strong endorsement of Wong’s leadership, just one year after he succeeded Lee Hsien Loong as the nation’s fourth Prime Minister.
PAP won 87 of the 97 seats in Parliament
The PAP won 87 of the 97 seats in Parliament, including five uncontested on Nomination Day (April 23). The opposition Workers’ Party retained its 10 seats. Voter turnout stood at a record-low 92.47%, despite compulsory voting laws.
PAP’s national vote share rose to 65.6%, a notable rebound from the 61.2% recorded in the 2020 elections. This makes Lawrence Wong the first PAP leader to improve the party’s vote share in his first election — a feat not seen during previous transitions in 1990 and 2004.
Celebrations erupted across the city-state as jubilant PAP supporters waved flags and gathered in stadiums to mark the historic victory. The win comes as Singapore grapples with global trade instability and slowing economic growth amid tariff tensions sparked by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies.

Wong, a U.S.-trained economist and Singapore’s Finance Minister, campaigned on a platform of stability, economic resilience, and strong governance. “Singaporeans have given the PAP a clear and strong mandate to govern,” he said in a post-election address. “These results will put Singapore in a better position to face this turbulent world.”
While acknowledging voters’ calls for more alternative voices, Wong emphasized the need for a united and experienced leadership team to navigate economic and geopolitical challenges.
Political analysts, including Eugene Tan of Singapore Management University, were surprised by the opposition’s lack of gains. “Voters signaled that their trust remains with a party that has consistently delivered,” said Tan.
The U.S. State Department congratulated Wong, expressing readiness to strengthen economic and defense ties. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also praised Singapore-EU relations, citing deepening cooperation in trade, security, and innovation.
Singapore PM Lawrence Wong’s rise to power & the end of Lee family dynasty
Wong’s rise to power in May 2024 marked the end of the Lee family dynasty, beginning with founding father Lee Kuan Yew. His successor and son, Lee Hsien Loong, stepped down after two decades as Prime Minister but remains in Cabinet as a Senior Minister.
With this decisive mandate, Lawrence Wong is now firmly positioned to lead Singapore through uncertain times and further cement its role as a stable and prosperous global hub.
