Statement by Prime Minister Carney on ‘Canada Day’

“One hundred and fifty-eight years ago, a few provinces bet on the idea that they’d be stronger together than they ever could be apart. They were right, and so they became a new federation that’s now grown into our strong, bilingual, multicultural, and ambitious country.

“Our story didn’t begin at Confederation. For thousands of years, Indigenous Peoples have called this land home, and our country’s next chapter will be written together in true partnership with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis.

“Our shared history has been marked by inflection points. Moments where Canada has had to step up – on the battlefield of Vimy, on the beaches of Normandy, in the homes of Gander after 9/11.

“Now, we face another such moment. The world is changing. Old friendships are fraying, our economy is being buffeted by a trade crisis, and our values are being tested by attacks on democracy and freedoms.

“In a more divided and dangerous world, Canadians are uniting. Together, we will build one Canadian economy – connected by major projects, powered by Canadian energy, transformed by Canadian technology, and crafted by Canadian workers. Together, we’re breaking down barriers across the country so you can buy Canadian everywhere and work anywhere. Together, we’ll rebuild, rearm, and reinvest in our Armed Forces – because Canadian leadership is defined not only by the strength of our values, but also by the value of our strength.

“This is the greatest nation on earth. Our destiny is to make it greater still – not by what we say, but by what we do. Happy Canada Day.”

The Right Honourable Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada

Mark Carney is Canada’s 24th Prime Minister. He was elected Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and sworn in as Prime Minister in March 2025. He leads a government that will take action to unite Canadians, defend Canada’s sovereignty, and build the strongest economy in the G7.

Born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Prime Minister Carney is the son of teachers and grew up with a strong sense of community and hard work. After graduating from St. Francis Xavier High School in Edmonton, he earned a Bachelor of Economics from Harvard University in 1988, followed by a Master of Economics in 1993 and a PhD in Economics in 1995, both from Oxford University.

Prime Minister Carney started his career in finance before joining Canada’s public service to help ensure our economy supports the things that Canadians value – like health care, security, and a life you can afford. As Governor of the Bank of Canada during the 2008 financial crisis, he guided our country through one of the most turbulent economic periods in modern history, protecting jobs and helping ensure that Canada came out stronger. In 2013, he was recruited to lead the Bank of England, stewarding the United Kingdom’s economy through Brexit and the economic and political crises that followed. In 2020, he began serving as the United Nations Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance, helping rally the world to build stronger economies as we fight climate change.

Prime Minister Carney’s government is focused on growing our great country, creating more higher-paying jobs, putting more money in Canadians’ pockets, and making Canada more secure.

Prime Minister Carney and his wife, Diana, are the proud parents of four children.
