Ghana: H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s Final address as President of the Republic of Ghana

On Monday, 9th September 2024, I delivered my final address as President of the Republic to the Ghana Bar Association, a gathering that holds special significance for me. My journey in public service began within the legal profession, and it is among my colleagues at the Bar that I have always felt most at home. The values of justice, equity, and the rule of law that we uphold as lawyers have been the guiding principles of my leadership as President, and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve our beloved country.

My career, as a lawyer and as President

As I reflected on my career, both as a lawyer and as President, I was reminded of the critical role the Bar has played in shaping my worldview and my commitment to democracy. From my early years as a young lawyer in the 1970s to the legal battles during the turbulent days of military rule, the law has always been my tool for defending the rights and freedoms of Ghanaians. It has been my privilege to carry that same dedication to justice into the highest office of the land.

My presidency of Republic of Ghana

My presidency, in many ways, has been a continuation of my devotion to the rule of law. I have worked to ensure that transparency, accountability, and justice remain at the heart of our governance structures. As I prepare to hand over the reins of leadership, I am confident that the legal frameworks we have strengthened will continue to serve Ghana well in the years to come.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Ghana Bar Association and all Ghanaians for their support over the past seven-and-a-half years. It has been an honour to serve as President, and I am proud of the progress we have made together. Let us continue to uphold the principles of justice, fairness and democracy for the good of our nation.
