From June 13 to 15, 2024, world leaders gathered in Borgo Egnazia, Fasano in the Apulia region of Italy for the G7 Summit 2024. The event brought together leaders from the Group of Seven nations, along with the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission representing the European Union.
G7 : Italy Hosts for the Seventh Time
Italy assumed the Presidency on January 1, 2024, succeeding Japan. This marks Italy’s seventh time leading the forum. Under its leadership, Italy set the summit’s priorities and hosted 20 Ministerial Meetings across the country.
The summit concluded with a final communiqué, outlining the Group’s shared commitments and policy directions.
What Is the G7?
The Group of Seven (G7) is an informal forum of major advanced economies. It includes:
- Italy
- Canada
- France
- Germany
- Japan
- The United Kingdom
- The United States
The European Union also participates in the work but does not hold the rotating presidency.
The G7 started in 1975 as a response to the global energy crisis. It has since evolved into a powerful platform for economic, political, and social cooperation.

G7 : Global Dialogue and Diplomacy
As in previous years, the 2024 summit welcomed leaders of invited states and international organizations. These participants engaged in open dialogue and collaboration on pressing global issues, continues to engage with emerging economies and developing nations, reinforcing its commitment to inclusive global governance. The tradition of the “African segment,” first introduced by Italy in 2001, remains a core part of this effort.
Key Topics on the 2024 Agenda
This year’s summit focused on:
- Climate and energy transitions
- Food security and sustainable agriculture
- Technological innovation and digital transformation
- Geopolitical tensions and global peace efforts
- Strengthening democratic values, freedom, and human rights

Ministerial and Sherpa Tracks Guide Summit Decisions
Behind the scenes, Sherpas—personal representatives of each leader—helped shape the summit outcomes. They coordinated with Political Directors, Foreign Affairs Sous-Sherpas, and Finance Deputies.
Additionally, Ministerial Meetings played a vital role. Since 1998, these meetings have helped ensure that discussions remain focused and well-informed.
Civil Society Voices Included
Various Engagement Groups brought together experts from science, culture, research, and other sectors. These groups submitted recommendations directly to the Presidency.
This approach ensures that a diverse range of voices influences global decision-making.
Looking Ahead
As Italy prepares to hand over the Presidency to Canada on December 31, 2024, the world reflects on a productive and inclusive summit. The G7 Summit 2024 reaffirmed the group’s role as a global leader in promoting peace, economic stability, and sustainable development.
