IPU: Who is The Rt. Hon. Dr. Tulia Ackson, the first African woman Parliamentarian elected as 31st IPU President

The Rt. Hon. Dr. Tulia Ackson is a dynamic and committed person, a distinctive politician, a remarkable lawyer, and a distinguished academician, who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills throughout her career. Prior
to becoming Speaker of the National Assembly of the United Republic of Tanzania in February 2022, the post she is holding to date, Hon. Tulia served as Deputy Speaker and Member of Parliament from 2015 to 2022. She also
served as Deputy Attorney General of the United Republic of Tanzania for a brief period in 2015. Her appointment as Deputy Attorney General of the United Republic of Tanzania followed her outstanding contribution as a Presidential-Appointed Member of the Tanzania’s Constitutional Assembly.

As Speaker and Member of Parliament for Mbeya Urban Constituency, Hon. Tulia has participated in numerous IPU meetings, including but not limited to the 144th to 146th Assemblies of the IPU, the 51st Assembly Session
of the Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum, the 65th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) and several ACP-EU Parliamentary Assemblies. Currently she is serving as President
of the African Geopolitical Group in the IPU, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the United Republic of Tanzania, Member of Parliament for Mbeya Urban Constituency and Chairperson of the Investment Board of the
Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) African Region.
