The State Great Khural (Parliament of Mongolia) officially approved Zandanshatar Gombojav as the new Prime Minister of Mongolia. The decision came during a plenary session, marking a significant shift in the country’s leadership.

From Chess to Politics: A Journey of Leadership

Gombojav has served in key political roles since 1992. From 2019 to 2024, he was Chairman of the Mongolian Parliament. He also held posts in foreign affairs, economics, and academic research.

In addition to his political career, Gombojav has led the Mongolian Chess Federation as its acting president. His leadership has made Mongolia a growing force in international chess.

FIDE President Praises Gombojav

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich congratulated Gombojav on his appointment.

“Your elevation to the highest executive office in Mongolia comes at a time when your vision, experience, and political wisdom are most needed,” Dvorkovich stated.

He praised Gombojav’s contributions to the growth of chess in Mongolia and globally.

Champion of Chess Education and Youth

As head of the Mongolian Chess Federation, Gombojav promoted chess as both a sport and an educational tool. Under his guidance, Mongolia made major progress in building a strong chess culture and developing young talent.

Dvorkovich noted, “FIDE deeply appreciates your efforts in integrating chess into national programs and international cooperation.”

A Leader for Strategic Thinking and Global Collaboration

FIDE expressed hope that Gombojav’s new role will create more opportunities for promoting strategic thinking, education, and international collaboration—core values that chess represents.

Zandanshatar Gombojav’s appointment as Prime Minister highlights a unique blend of leadership in politics and sports. His vision could shape not only Mongolia’s political landscape but also elevate its role in international chess development.
